How to Choose the Right Self-Adhesive Material for Your Label Requirements

How to Choose the Right Self-Adhesive Material for Your Label Requirements

Understanding Self-Adhesive Materials: A Complete Guide

Choosing the right self-adhesive material can make the difference between a label that performs flawlessly and one that fails in the field. Whether you're a commercial printer, label maker, or industrial buyer, understanding the requirements, key differences between materials, adhesives and backing options is essential for successful label production.

Key Questions to Ask

  1. Format Required
Do you require plain sheets or kiss-cut labels?

  2. Printing Method
What printing process will be used?
    (Digital, Litho, Screen, UV Offset)

  3. Sheet / Label Size

What sheet size do you require?

If pre-cut: What label size is needed?

  4. Material & Finish
What material and surface finish do you need?
(Paper or Film / Uncoated, Matt, Gloss, Textured)

  5. Adhesive Type
    Which adhesive is required?
    (Permanent, Removable, Supertack)

  6. Backing Sheet Requirements
What backing specification do you need?
(Solid-Back, Split-Back, Crack Back Plus / Diagonal Splits)

  7. Quantity
    What quantity is required?

Optional (But Often Critical) Questions

  1. Application Material & Surface
What surface will the labels be applied to?
(e.g., cardboard, glass, plastic, metal, / smooth, textured, curved surfaces)

  2. Environment / Conditions
Will the labels face: (Moisture, refrigeration, heat, chemicals, indoor or outdoor use, abrasion) Consider both application and service temperatures.

  3. Compliance / Standards & Special Properties
Any regulatory requirements? (Food-safe, Marine grade BS5609, Anti slip R10, top-coatings etc.)  Waterproof, premium appearance, opaque, floor graphics, etc.

  4. Delivery / Deadlines Required delivery date?

Face Materials Explained

The face material is the printable surface of your label. Each material type offers distinct characteristics suited to different applications:

Paper Materials

Best for: Indoor applications, product labels, packaging, wine labels
Characteristics: Cost-effective, excellent printability, wide variety of finishes (uncoated, matt, gloss, cast coated, felt, laid and many more)
Limitations: Not waterproof (unless specially treated), less durable outdoors

Popular paper options include Matt Coated papers for everyday labels, Cast Coated papers for premium finishes, and specialty papers like Felt Candido for wine labels with wet strength properties.

Polyester (PET) Films

Best for: Outdoor labels, durable goods, equipment labels, harsh environments
Characteristics: Waterproof, tear-resistant, excellent UV resistance, high durability
Limitations: Higher cost than paper, requires appropriate printing method

Our Perfect Digital Gloss Clear Polyester 50mic offers exceptional clarity and durability, making it ideal for products that need to withstand moisture and outdoor conditions.

Polypropylene (PP) Films

Best for: Squeezable containers, outdoor applications, chemical-resistant labels
Characteristics: Flexible, moisture-resistant, good chemical resistance, ages well
Limitations: Can be more challenging to print on than polyester

Perfect Digital Gloss White Polypropylene 60mic provides high resistance to aging and is perfect for products exposed to the elements.

Vinyl Films

Best for: Long-term outdoor signage, vehicle graphics, extreme durability needs
Characteristics: Exceptional durability, conformable, weather-resistant
Limitations: Premium pricing, specific printing requirements

Understanding Adhesive Types

The adhesive is just as important as the face material. Choosing the wrong adhesive can result in labels that won't stick or can't be removed when needed.

Permanent Adhesive

Use when: Labels need to stay in place indefinitely
Applications: Product labels, asset tags, warning labels, barcodes
Characteristics: Strong initial tack, builds bond strength over time, difficult to remove without residue

Removable Adhesive

Use when: Labels need to be removed cleanly without residue
Applications: Promotional labels, temporary pricing, rental equipment, reusable containers
Characteristics: Lower initial tack, removes cleanly, repositionable in some cases

Supertack Adhesive

Use when: Applying to difficult surfaces like textured plastics, powder-coated metals, or low-energy surfaces
Applications: Industrial labels, rough surface applications, challenging substrates
Characteristics: Very aggressive adhesion, immediate bond, works on difficult surfaces

Supertack Plus Adhesive

Use when: Maximum adhesion is required on extremely challenging surfaces
Applications: Extreme industrial environments, highly textured surfaces
Characteristics: Highest adhesion level, permanent bond, specialized applications

Backing Options: Split-Back vs Solid-Back

Solid-Back (Standard)

Traditional backing sheet that remains intact. Suitable for most applications, especially simple shapes and single labels per sheet.

Split-Back (Precision Cut)

Backing sheet is precision-cut for easy label removal and application. Ideal for:

  • Complex label shapes
  • Multiple labels per sheet
  • Production efficiency
  • Hand-application scenarios

Decision Guide: Choosing Your Material

For indoor product labels: Matt or Gloss Coated Paper with permanent adhesive

For outdoor applications: Polyester or Polypropylene films with permanent or supertack adhesive

For wine and spirit bottles: Felt Candido, White Laid, or Cast Coated papers with permanent adhesive (wet strength options available)

For digital printing (SRA3): Perfect Digital range in Matt or Gloss, available in paper and film options

For difficult surfaces: Any face material with Supertack or Supertack Plus adhesive

For temporary applications: Any face material with removable adhesive
